With its new, state of the art terminal building, St. Maarten's
Princess Juliana
International Airport Operating Company (PJIAE) NV is taking travel
and
tourism in the North Eastern Caribbean to new heights. A voyage that
starts
at PJIAE, takes off at a high note.
The four-level facility has the passenger in mind. Fully
air-conditioned, with a
spacious check-in area that has 46 check-in positions, 10 immigration-
and
passport control points, a spacious, comfortable departure lounge, and
an
exciting 2,815m2 airport mall, the new building is meant to deliver
the first
and lasting, good impression to every visitor that steps off an
aircraft in St.
Maarten. By executing this project, PJIAE has ensured continued
compli-
ance with increasing international safety and security standards, to
meet
future traffic demand and to improve the level of service at the
airport.
PJIAE's new headquarters represent a well-executed plan to secure a
fruit-
ful future. St. Maarten's new symbol of progress anchors our airport's
role as
a regional leader in aviation and stands proudly as our island's
Statement of
Accomplishment.

The Engine of Continuous Development
Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA)
started as a small military base that was built in
1942 and was converted into a civilian airport
in 1943, the first in this part of the Caribbean.
In 1964 the Airport was remodeled and relocated; it
now boasted a new terminal building with an ope-
rational Control Tower.
In 1986 the airport building was extended, new
arrival and departure halls were added and more
aircraft space was created.
In 2006, PJIAE completed a US$.100 million up-
grade. Visitors now arrive at an ultramodern airport
terminal facility, designed to meet the demands of
today's industry.

A Well Oiled Aviation Operation
PJIA is operated by the Princess Juliana Interna-
tional Operating Company (PJIAE), a limited
liabil-
ity company owned by PJIA Holding N.V., which
in turn is fully owned by the Government of St.
Maarten.
PJIA indirectly secures prosperity for some 80
businesses operating at the new facility and em-
ployment for some 1,000 persons, 268 of whom
directly by the airport operating company.
PJIAE is headed by a Supervisory Board of Direc-
tors, who appoints the President of the company.
The current Supervisory Board was appointed in
2003; the current President in 1998.

A Catalyst for Economic Growth
PJIAE has always played an important role in
the socio-economic transition of St. Maarten
from an agriculturally based economy into one of
the major tourist destinations in the Caribbean.
One of the busiest airports in the Caribbean,
our gateway has a strategic role in the
development of neighboring islands Saba,
St. Eustatius, Anguilla and St. Barth's.
Approximately 25 percent of all passengers that
arrive at PJIA travel on to one of these islands
and this is taken into account in the design
and operations of our new terminal facility.
Transit passengers enjoy smooth transfers, which
is also facilitated by the commuter airlines. Most
have interline agreements with the larger carriers,
which enables seamless connections.

St. Maarten's Single Most Strategic Asset
As St. Maarten is an island that is highly depen-
dent on its tourism industry, PJIA's role as revenue
earner is crucial.
A role our gateway always fulfilled gracefully: From
1964 to 1970 annual passenger traffic grew at an
average of 22%; during the decade 1970-1980
growth stabilized at an annual average of approxi-
mately 12%.
Today, PJIA is a major connection of European
and American flights to the Caribbean. The airport
handled 80,357 aircraft movements in 2006, an
increase of 1.9% over 2005, when 78,884 move-
ments were recorded.

A
Testimony Of Vision
The construction of PJIAE's new 27,000 square
meter facility is in line with forecasted growth
in passenger numbers. The International Air
Transport Association (IATA) predicts that
international demand for travel will grow at a steady
annual rate of 4.3 per cent over the next ten years.
All indications show that traffic to the Caribbean
will continue to grow as well. Airports Council
International (ACI) projects a four percent growth
for the region and PJIAE is well positioned to take
advantage of this development.
Our new facility is designed with the forecast
in mind, while there is ample room for further
expansion if demand dictates the need.

St. Maarten's Symbol Of Progress
With a Check-In Hall that has 46 Check-In counters,
airline and airport information booths, and a
spacious departure hall with 11 boarding gates four
of which with jet-bridges-, the new terminal building
sufficiently equips our airport to handle the future.
The upgrade also included the expansion of the apron
to 72,500 square meters -enough to park
nine wide
body jets alongside an array of commuter planes and
corporate jets-, the construction of more than 600
new car parking spaces and a new road network.
A
new radar facility, the most modern in this part of

The Gateway To Paradise
Our airport plays an invaluable role in the tou-
rism industries of the surrounding destinations
St. Martin, Saba, St. Eustatius, Anguilla and
St. Barths, for whom we serve as the main hub.
Tourism in this region is about more than just
visi-
ting one island, and PJIAE is an important player in
this development.
About 25 percent of all passenger traffic that ar-
rives in St. Maarten, has one of St. Maarten's sister
destinations as final stop.
